Il Namanyere Designated Distric Hospital (NDDH) è una struttura ospedaliera situata nel distretto di Sumbawanga, regione a ovest della Tanzania, lungo il lago Tanganika. Il complesso, di recente costruzione, comprende i seguenti reparti: Maternità, Pediatria, Chirurgia (Major Theatre), Ambulatorio medicazioni (Minor Theatre), Ambulatorio malattie infettive e Centro HIV (Outpatient Department), Servizio vaccinazioni, Medicina Interna (General Ward), Laboratorio Analisi e Odontoiatria (alquanto discutibile).
L’ospedale è senz’altro un punto di riferimento per gli abitanti del distretto di Sumbawanga e fornisce sufficienti livelli di assistenza per i casi clinici più semplici. Il primo punto debole dell’ospedale è la sua collocazione, mal raggiungibile anche a causa dello stato dimesso delle strade. In secondo luogo la mancanza di elettricità pone seri problemi in riferimento allo svolgimento di alcuni accertamenti diagnostici e alle attività serali. Infine la carenza di materiale (garze, disinfettanti, guanti, mascherine, tutine di sala operatoria) rende estremamente difficoltoso il compito dei sanitari, senza contare la maggior difficoltà e i più lunghi tempi di guarigione richiesti.
La realtà mette gli studenti in condizione di svolgere il proprio lavoro secondo le modalità che hanno imparato presso le rispettive scuole e di trasferire quindi la loro conoscenza ai locali, che non avrebbero altrimenti i mezzi per farlo. Al contempo richiede coraggio ed intraprendenza nel prendere da soli decisioni nelle situazioni d’emergenza.

Founded in 1972 by the Catholic Diocese of Sumbwanga, this is the only hospital serving a wide area in South-Western Tanzania where the roads are very poor. The nearest referral unit is 99km away. It therefore deals with a wide range of conditions, including surgery, and takes many referral cases but up to now has been poorly maintained in terms of buildings and equipment. Inter Care’s supplies, together with some teaching materials; have helped maintain not only the stock of medicines but also the morale of the young doctors there who tend to feel isolated. There are 4 Doctors and 2 Clinical Officers on site overseeing the 150 beds which had 6,510 admissions in 2009 with a high percentage presenting with Malaria. Malaria which complicates Aneamia especially to the unders fives, continued to cause morbidity and mortality rates in the population. They also organise over 50,000 outpatient appointments a year.
The population in the Nkasi District has been increasing by growth rate of 4.6% per unnum and in 2009 was 259,038.
The main tribes in the Nkasi District are: Fipa, Pimbwe, Lungu, Immigrant Sukuma and people from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. The population is sustained by small scale farming of food crops such as: maize, finger millet, beans, rice, cassava and groundnuts. Also they grow sunflower and tobacco being the main cash crops. Few people are now starting to grow coffe as a source of income. On the lake shore of Tanganyika, inhabitants live on small scale fishing. Cattle, goats and poultry keeping are the main livestock kept.
